Tradition V. Cultural Relevance - Where’s Equestrianism Heading?

Many equestrian disciplines emphasises prestige over cultural evolution, evident with the uniform for European discipline not changing since the inception of the sport over 120 years ago.

Does this emphasis on “heritage” risks limiting the sport’s cultural relevance?

In the context of fashion, many cultural institutions rely heavily on heritage to maintain prestige. However, heritage alone does not guarantee cultural relevance. “Heritage” fashion houses provide a useful comparison.

For example:

  • Balenciaga re-engaged cultural relevance with younger audiences by experimenting with contemporary culture, gaming, streetwear, and digital fashion.
  • Chanel continually attempts reinterpreting its historic visual codes through contemporary design.
  • Ralph Lauren engages in cultural storytelling with campaigns such as Oak Bluffs

It could be said tradition sustains prestige , but innovation sustains relevance.
